"US Beauty Market Report": These sub-categories will be the best-selling in 2022!

It is learned that according to data from market research firm The NPD Group, sales in the US high-end beauty market will increase by 15% year-on-year to US$27.1 billion in 2022. All sub-categories achieved double-digit growth, including 18% growth in color cosmetics, 12% growth in skin care products, 11% growth in perfumes, and 22% growth in hair products.

Data shows that revenue in the U.S. mass and high-end beauty markets continued to grow in 2022, up 11% in total compared to 2021. However, demand for high-end beauty products was the strongest, with sales increasing both physically and online.

Specifically, color cosmetics (+18%) contributed the most to the sales growth of the entire beauty market. Lip products are the fastest growing segment in cosmetics, with sales exceeding pre-epidemic (2019) levels and a double-digit growth rate. On the other hand, in 2022, lip gloss sales exceeded lipstick sales.

Perfume was the fastest growing category in 2021 and continued to maintain high growth in 2022, with sales increasing by 11% year-on-year. Among them, the sales of eau de toilette and handmade perfume were the strongest. In addition, in the field of skin care products (+12%), the sales growth rate of body care products was more than three times that of facial products.

Hair and head care products (+22%) were the smallest category with the fastest sales growth, with products with specific benefits (anti-dandruff, anti-itching, etc.) being the most popular. Within this category, hair care was the fastest growing segment, while hair products such as shampoo, conditioner and dye saw the biggest sales decline.

According to NPD, factors driving the growth of the U.S. high-end beauty market include increased spending by high-income people, changes in health perceptions, and people returning to social activities.

Larissa Jensen, beauty industry consultant at NPD, said: "Overall, the future prospects of the US beauty market are positive, including mass and high-end. The data shows that people are willing to continue to spend on beauty products. In 2023, the US beauty market is expected to grow further."
