U.S. e-commerce sales to exceed $357 billion! Overview of each platform's performance

It is learned that according to the latest forecast of eMarket, despite the slowdown in growth, sales in the US e-commerce market are expected to reach US$357.26 billion in 2022, accounting for 34.6% of the global market.

After growing nearly 45% during the pandemic in 2020, U.S. e-commerce sales grew by only 16.7% in 2021, and growth will continue to slow to 14.8% this year. Sales will continue to decline by 2024, although at a much smaller rate.

How are the platforms performing?

Amazon remains the largest e-commerce platform with over 72% market share. Amazon’s online sales are expected to grow 18.3% in 2022 to over $250 billion. Its sales are expected to reach 25% of total U.S. retail sales.

eBay holds the position of the second largest online marketplace, but its share has been declining since 2016 due to sales turbulence. This year, with a 3% decline in growth, eBay's share will fall to 10.7%.

Aside from Amazon, Etsy is the only marketplace to see an increase in market share. Although small, its share will increase to 2.6% this year. Etsy marketplace sales are expected to grow 17% this year to $9.2 billion.

Walmart's share of the U.S. e-commerce market began to slow for the first time in 2021 and continued the trend in 2022, falling to 2%. After growing nearly 100% in 2020, Walmart's e-commerce sales growth slowed to 11.2% in 2021. This year's growth will reach 10.5%, reaching US$7.2 billion.
