According to the National Retail Federation's annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics, Americans are expected to spend $10.14 billion on Halloween-related merchandise this year, up from $8.05 billion in 2020, a record high. Plans to celebrate Halloween this year have increased compared to last year, approaching pre-COVID levels.

The survey shows that 65% of Americans plan to celebrate Halloween or participate in Halloween activities this year, up from 58% in 2020. In comparison, the proportion was 68% in 2019.

Average spending is also up. Americans are expected to spend $102.74 per person on costumes, candy, decorations and greeting cards — $10 more than last year. Total spending on Halloween costumes is expected to be $3.32 billion this year, the highest since 2017.

In addition, Americans will also buy Halloween items early, with 45% planning to buy in September or earlier, and another 39% will complete their purchases in early October.
