At around 6 pm local time on August 4, a huge explosion occurred in the port area of ​​Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. The explosion occurred twice in succession, causing damage to many houses, shattering glass, and red smoke rising in the sky.


According to the latest information from Sohang.com, the Prime Minister of Lebanon has confirmed that more than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded. He stressed that it is unacceptable that a truck carrying more than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate has been parked in a warehouse for six years without taking any preventive measures .



Foreign media reported that UN peacekeepers and German embassy staff were injured in the explosion. Lebanon's Supreme Defense Council declared a state of emergency in Beirut. Abbas Ibrahim, head of Lebanon's security department, said that flammable chemicals were stored in the port warehouse.


According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, the explosion has killed at least 78 people and injured more than 4,000. The Lebanese Prime Minister declared the 5th a national day of mourning.

The first explosion occurred at the Beirut port at around 18:00 local time, and the second explosion that followed was much more destructive than the first. Videos showed that the explosion site was in a mess, the shock wave caused serious damage to surrounding buildings, rubble was scattered all over the streets, the sky was covered with dust, and thick smoke blocked the sunset. Some people in the area exclaimed, "This is like the end of the world."

The Lebanese Minister of Health said that the local hospital emergency room is overcrowded and the injured have been sent to other hospitals for treatment. Currently, the Lebanese Armed Forces have been sent to the scene to assist in the rescue.

Witnesses said that the explosion was like a volcanic eruption. The sound of the explosion and the rising smoke could be heard and seen several kilometers away; the entire city of Beirut was covered with "broken glass rain."

Lebanese President Aoun convened an emergency security meeting that day, instructing the military to prepare for the explosion, requiring relevant departments to provide free medical treatment for the injured, and to provide assistance to families who suffered huge losses or were displaced. Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud couldn't help sobbing and crying when speaking at the scene. He compared the accident to a "Hiroshima-Nagasaki-style national disaster."



Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab has declared the 5th a national day of mourning and sought international assistance. "Those responsible for the explosion will pay the price," Diab said. According to the Russian Satellite Network, the Lebanese Prime Minister's wife and daughter were also injured in the explosion, and the leader of the Lebanese Phalange Party, Najarian, was killed in the explosion.

The Israeli military said "it is time to transcend the conflict" and said it would provide humanitarian and medical assistance to Lebanon. Russian officials said Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences to the Lebanese President for the casualties and damage caused by the Beirut explosion. Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif said Iran is ready to provide any necessary assistance to Lebanon. Egyptian President Sisi issued a statement expressing condolences and sympathy.
