The number of online shoppers in the United States has increased by 380%, and may reach 228.9 million in 2023!

It is learned that according to research by digital marketing agency Adtaxi, the number of online shoppers in the United States has surged 380% since 2017, and an estimated 228.9 million American adults will shop online in 2023.

The study shows that the most popular online shopping items in 2023 will be clothing (67%), followed by beauty and personal care products (53%), health and wellness products (51%), and food and groceries (44%). At the bottom of the list are mattresses and CBD, at 8% and 10%, respectively. Interestingly, almost half of Americans say they will buy a home, new or used car online.

“It’s no surprise that e-commerce spending will hit an all-time high this year, given the greater convenience, accessibility and personalization that online shopping brings to consumers’ lives,” said Murray Woronoff, research director at Adtaxi. “Looking back to 2017, this year’s survey statistics prove that consumers prefer to shop online and are now shopping online more frequently.”

The Adtaxi survey also found that convenience (79%) is the main reason that drives American consumers to shop online. Before shopping online, American consumers will compare prices (52%), check consumer reviews (51%) and look for coupons (46%).

In addition, 93% of adults said they shop online at least once a month, 27% said they shop online at least once a week, and 25% said they shop online at least once a day. In 2017, the proportions were 70%, 27% and 5% respectively.

When shopping online, the majority (78%) of Americans use their mobile phones, nearly half (46%) use their laptops, 30% use their tablets, and 20% use their desktop computers. On average, each American uses two different device types to shop online.

We know that many Americans only look at products online and don’t buy them (abandoning their shopping carts). However, if the product is offered at a reduced price or free shipping, they are likely to re-order it.

Adtaxi surveyed 1,088 adults in the United States across geographic regions, income levels, gender, and age. The survey was conducted on April 20, 2023.
