Despite high inflation, Americans are still spending money! What will they buy on Prime Day this year?

According to a survey by omnichannel marketing platform Skai, inflation has not dampened the enthusiasm of American shoppers for Prime Day. Among the 1,000 consumers surveyed by Skai, 95% of respondents plan to browse or purchase items during Prime Day this year.

Due to concerns about inflation, 14% of respondents said they will spend less on Prime Day this year than last year. However, 27% of respondents plan to spend more on Prime Day this year. In addition, nearly 70% of respondents are likely to compare prices on other retail websites before Prime Day in order to make the best purchasing decision.

The Skai survey also revealed the main products that American consumers will buy during Prime Day:

  • Consumer electronics, household products and fashion apparel are the top three categories of interest to respondents.

  • 94% of respondents plan to purchase home products on Prime Day.

  • 91% of respondents plan to purchase consumer electronics on Prime Day.

  • 89% of respondents plan to purchase fashion and apparel products on Prime Day.

  • 83% of respondents plan to purchase beauty and personal care products on Prime Day.

  • 74% of respondents plan to buy toys and games on Prime Day.

  • 74% of consumers plan to purchase pet supplies on Prime Day.

In addition, a survey of more than 1,000 Prime members from performance marketing company Tinuiti found that most Prime Day shoppers do research before making a purchase. The survey showed:

20% of respondents will research products they might purchase at least a week in advance; another 51% will begin researching products in the week leading up to Prime Day.

Prime members are most likely to use common search engines like Google to determine if there are Prime Day deals, with 54% of respondents planning to do so. About a quarter (26%) will browse for products on social media, a number that jumps to 46% among Gen Z.

It is learned that Prime Day has become the most influential shopping event in the United States. According to the Adobe Digital Economy Index data, the total online consumption in the United States on Prime Day in 2022 reached US$11.9 billion (the first day: US$6 billion, the second day: US$5.9 billion), setting a record high. Compared with Prime Day in 2021 (US$11 billion), it increased by 8.5%.
