U.S. port container volume will slow down in spring! China's city lockdown may be more conducive to alleviating port congestion!

It is learned that Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, said in a briefing on Wednesday that the container volume at the Port of Los Angeles is expected to slow down this spring compared with last year, and the series of chain reactions brought about by the lockdown in China may be more conducive to solving the current cargo backlog problem.

U.S. retailers plan to replenish low inventories due to continued port congestion, which will help keep imports at a "stable" level, although imports are down from an average of 970,000 TEUs during last year's period (March to May 2021). If these retailers are at a standstill due to the shutdown of ports, factories and other logistics companies, it will help solve the cargo backlog at ports.

The country's largest container port handled 850,000 TEUs, a record high for cargo in February, and handled 338,000 TEUs of empty containers, up 18.6% year-on-year. In addition, the port's import-export ratio continued to rise, with imports increasing 2.7% year-on-year to 424,000 TEUs, while exports fell 5.7% year-on-year to 95,000 TEUs, the 36th decline in the past 40 months.

Currently, U.S. states and governments are stepping up their efforts to help ports and other supply chain stakeholders ease congestion. It is reported that California Governor Gavin Newsom plans to invest $2.3 billion in California ports, of which $1.2 billion will be used for port infrastructure and cargo transportation, including rail, road, bridge and zero-emission modernization projects.

In addition, the Port of Los Angeles, the Port of Long Beach and the Georgia Ports Authority will pilot the data sharing portal announced by the White House administration on March 15. Earlier this week, the Biden administration had asked ports, shippers, carriers, 3PLs and other stakeholders to share data information and establish a data sharing portal to improve the operational efficiency of the cargo transportation chain.
