In 1937, the Patent Registry was established as the re-registration agency for UK patents or European patents designating the UK.

In 1939, the Trademark Registry was established to register local trademarks under the Trademarks Ordinance.

On September 9, 1999, the Registry of Patents and Trademarks (RTMP) was changed to the State Intellectual Property Office (IPOS)

On April 1, 2001, IPOS was transformed into a statutory board.

In 2002, the Registered Industrial Design Law was promulgated

On September 25, 2014, IPOS was officially appointed as an international patent search and examination agency.
