Pocket's predecessor was Read it later, which was founded in 2007. It was renamed Pocket in April 2012 and the original paid service was made free.

In November 2012, Pocket opened its new API to third-party applications, helping users to store articles to Pocket more smoothly through third-party applications, and helping developers to complete development more easily in iOS and Mac environments.
