It is predicted that US e-commerce sales will increase to US$933.3 billion in 2021! What are the hot-selling categories?

It is learned that eMarketer has made a forecast on the development of US e-commerce in 2021. It is expected that the growth rate of US e-commerce sales will reach 17.9% in 2021, increasing to US$933.3 billion. The e-commerce penetration rate will more than double compared with 2019, and it is expected that the e-commerce penetration rate in the United States will reach 23.6% by 2025.

In 2020, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, offline sales in the United States fell by 10.5% year-on-year, and online sales made up for this shortfall, causing total retail sales in the United States to increase by 3.4%. After a turbulent 2020, the US economy will recover in 2021, with total retail sales expected to increase by 7.9% in 2021, and online and offline sales expected to increase by 6.3% and 17.9% year-on-year respectively.

eMarketer predicts that U.S. consumers will spend $933.3 billion on e-commerce in 2021, up 17.9% year-on-year, equivalent to 15.3% of total retail sales. Physical retail spending will increase 6.3% in 2021 to $5.149 trillion, the strongest growth rate since 2011.

eMarketer predicts that U.S. e-commerce sales will account for 23.6% of total retail sales in 2025, up from just 11.0% in 2019. The U.S. grocery e-commerce market is expected to expand further, reaching $140.96 billion in sales by 2024. Social commerce sales are expected to grow 35.8% to $36.62 billion this year, and about a quarter of digital buyers will use buy now, pay later (BNPL) services.

According to eMarketer, only clothing and accessories sales in the United States will exceed the growth in 2020 in 2021, with a growth rate of 23.1%. In addition, furniture, food and beverages, and health and personal care categories are also expected to increase by 20% in 2021.
