Changes in order volume of US e-commerce platforms in Q4, Amazon and Shopify both grew



It is learned that on January 18, warehousing and inventory management service provider Extensiv released its insights into the US e-commerce platform in the fourth quarter of 2023. Extensiv studied thousands of brands that use its platform to process orders, revealing changes in order volume on mainstream platforms such as Amazon and Shopify, as well as dozens of other smaller platforms.

Data shows that in the fourth quarter of 2023, Amazon's third-party sellers' order volume increased by 65% ​​year-on-year, while Shopify's order volume increased by 19%, and other third-party platforms remained unchanged.

Compared with the previous quarter, the average order volume of Amazon's third-party sellers in the fourth quarter increased by 34%, and compared with the same period last year, Amazon's order volume increased by 65%. In the fourth quarter, third-party sellers accounted for 60% of Amazon's total sales, and Amazon's third-party seller service revenue was US$343.4, an increase of 20% from US$28.67 billion in the same period of 2022.


Shopify's average order volume increased 20% year-over-year in the fourth quarter compared to the previous quarter, while Shopify's order volume increased 19% year-over-year. In November 2023, Shopify reported that total revenue in the third quarter increased 25% year-over-year to $1.7 billion. Analysts predict that Shopify's revenue will grow steadily by 16.8% each year.


The order volume of other e-commerce platforms remained unchanged overall, up 4% year-on-year and only 2% compared to the third quarter.

Data from Extensiv also shows that Amazon dominated Black Friday. Amazon's orders on Thanksgiving/Black Friday increased 111% year-over-year, while Shopify increased 16% and other third-party platforms increased 3%. In addition, Amazon's week-over-week growth on Thanksgiving/Black Friday was 34%, Shopify was 65%, and other third-party platforms were 31%. Amazon previously reported that the shopping event from November 17 to 27 was its largest to date, with consumers around the world purchasing more than 1 billion items on its platform, of which more than 500 million were from third-party sellers.

In addition, Amazon's orders continued to grow during Cyber ​​Week, while other platforms stagnated. In the week after Thanksgiving (also known as Cyber ​​Week, November 26 to December 2, 2023), Amazon's orders increased by 63% year-on-year, Shopify increased by 11%, but other third-party platforms decreased by 3%. On a week-on-week basis, Amazon's orders increased by 18%, while Shopify decreased by 26% and other third-party platforms decreased by 2%.
