Changes in order volume of US e-commerce platforms in Q3: Amazon surges, while Shopify remains flat

It is learned that on October 23, warehousing and inventory management service provider Extensiv released its insights into the US e-commerce platform for the third quarter of 2023. The data is based on thousands of brands that use Extensiv products to process orders, revealing changes in order volume from various platforms.

Data shows that Amazon's third-party sellers' orders have continued to grow both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year, and the growth is strong. Shopify's order volume and other third-party markets remain unchanged, but Shopify's sales revenue growth momentum is good, indicating an increase in demand for its high-priced goods.

Extensiv data shows that in the third quarter, the average sales volume of Amazon's third-party sellers increased by 21% from the second quarter and 76% year-on-year. According to MarketplacePulse data, in the second quarter, third-party sellers accounted for 60% of Amazon's total sales, and Amazon's third-party seller service revenue was US$322, an increase of 18% year-on-year.

In the third quarter, Shopify's average order volume increased by 18% year-on-year, but decreased by 1% from the second quarter. According to Shopify's second-quarter results, its total revenue in Q2 increased by 30.81% year-on-year to US$1.69 billion. However, analysts generally predict that Shopify's revenue will grow steadily by 17.9% annually, and the flat order volume indicates to some extent that merchants are selling more high-priced goods.

Extensiv analysis also showed that order volumes on other e-commerce platforms remained generally unchanged, growing 4% year-on-year in the third quarter and only 1% quarter-on-quarter.
