Walmart Canada has launched a new subscription program called Delivery Pass, which will offer free next-day delivery of more than 65,000 items, including groceries and daily necessities, for $8.97 per month or $89 per year. Walmart said that Walmart shoppers who subscribe to the Walmart Canada program can now enjoy unlimited, free next-day delivery for a monthly or annual fee. The program will be launched first in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, and Walmart will fully launch it across Canada later this summer. Users who join the Delivery Pass program can choose a delivery time period and time slot when shopping on Walmart Canada's e-commerce website or app, and add items to the shopping cart (the minimum order amount before tax is $35). At checkout, the next-day delivery service fee will be automatically deducted. In addition, members can also upgrade "next-day delivery" to "same-day delivery" or "express delivery" at a discount. Benefits provided by the program include:
Walmart Canada said it will continue to enhance the program to provide more services for customers. "Canadians don't have to choose between fast, convenient delivery and everyday low prices. We are transforming our omnichannel offerings to better serve Canadians and create the most efficient, consistent and affordable way to shop," said Laurent Duray, chief e-commerce officer at Walmart Canada. "Delivery Pass will change the way Canadians shop, providing them with the items they need at the best prices." “Now, our customers can not only save money when they shop at Walmart, but they can also spend less time in-store shopping for groceries because they can choose to have their groceries delivered right to their door,” said Ignacio Baladron, vice president of omnichannel operations at Walmart Canada. “We’re offering unlimited free next-day delivery on items including groceries, electronics and toys at low prices.” Walmart+ expands into Canada to compete with Amazon Prime Although Walmart has consistently denied that it has made an effort to directly compete against Amazon's Prime subscription service, there are in fact many similarities between Amazon Prime and Walmart's Walmart+ paid membership program, which was launched in September 2020. Like Delivery Pass, Walmart+ offers unlimited free deliveries on orders of $35 or more. It also offers gas discounts of up to 5 cents per gallon and free access to the chain's Scan & Go app, which allows shoppers to scan items in-store and check out with Walmart Pay, thus avoiding checkout lines. The retailer has added many benefits over the years since its launch. Walmart+ costs $98 a year and $12.95 a year, with a 15-day free trial. The launch of Delivery Pass means that Walmart+'s competition with Amazon Prime has expanded to Canada.
