Musk is preparing to file a plagiarism lawsuit against Zuckerberg for his Threads app

The competition between Twitter and Meta has reached a new high, with Twitter threatening to file a plagiarism lawsuit against Instagram's parent company, Meta, the creator of the Threads app .

Twitter's legal representative, lawyer Alex Spiro, wrote to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, accusing the company of stealing trade secrets by hiring former Twitter employees. The letter stated that Meta was suspected of "systematic, deliberate, and illegal misappropriation of Twitter's trade secrets and other intellectual property."

The letter states that Meta has hired many former Twitter employees who had and still have access to highly confidential information and trade secrets from the platform. These former employees will bring valuable intellectual property to their new employers.

Twitter owner Elon Musk accused Meta of "copying" when it launched its rival social network Threads. The tycoon said in a tweet that "competition is OK, cheating is not OK," which quickly became a hot topic on the social network.

Meta Response

In response to the allegations, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone flatly denied the claims in the letter and said that "no one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee."

While Twitter has yet to file a formal lawsuit, it has made it clear that it will take legal action against Meta if the company does not immediately address its concerns.

"Twitter intends to protect its intellectual property and requires Meta to take immediate action to cease using Twitter's trade secrets or other confidential information," the statement said.

Interestingly, by signing up for Threads, users can see who they already follow on Twitter, even without connecting directly to their Instagram account.

Although it has not been officially confirmed, there has been speculation that Meta may be web-scraping Twitter to obtain data that can be used to personalize the Threads user experience.

The legal showdown between Twitter and Meta raises important questions about competition in the social media space and how companies protect and use their competitors’ intellectual property.

Twitter sees Threads as a threat

In the months since Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion, the social network has been challenged by a growing number of competitors, such as decentralized social networks Mastodon and Bluesky, which was launched by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. But Twitter has not threatened to sue.

Unlike some of Twitter's competitors, Threads has grown rapidly, with Zuckerberg reporting that 30 million users signed up on the app's first day. As of Thursday afternoon, Threads was the No. 1 free app on the iOS App Store. The pace of growth has put Twitter on notice.

Threads is now available in Peru

Meta’s new app, “Threads,” is now available in Peru. In recent months, many tech companies have tried to carve up Twitter’s market share, but Threads is in the lead, backed by Meta’s deep pockets and Instagram’s massive user base (more than 2.1 billion monthly active users worldwide).

“Threads” became the number one trend on Twitter, with over 2.1 million conversations:
