Fitbit Ionic smartwatches recalled after 693,000 units sold

It is learned that according to foreign media reports, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of Fitbit Ionic smart watches on March 2. The reason for the recall is that the lithium-ion battery in the watch may overheat and pose a risk of burns to the wearer.

The recalled watches are reportedly equipped with a polyurethane strap and a 1.4-inch color LCD screen. The watches can track the user's exercise, heart rate and sleep. The word "Fitbit" is printed on the front of the watch, and the "model number" starting with FB503 is printed on the inside near the strap.

The following are the watch models and colors involved in this recall:

The report said that these watches were all made in Taiwan, China, and the importer was Fitbit LLC. The watches were sold on Amazon.com, Fitbit.com, and physical stores such as Best Buy, Kohl's, and Target from September 2017 to December 2021, with prices ranging from US$200 to US$300. Fitbit stopped producing these watches in 2020.

It is understood that about 1 million watches were sold in the US market and 693,000 were sold worldwide. CPSC has received 115 reports of watch battery overheating in the US (59 international reports), including 2 reports of third-degree burns (40 international burn reports).

The CPSC recommends that purchasers immediately stop using the recalled Fitbit Ionic smartwatches. As a remedy for this product, purchasers need to contact Fitbit and return the product (postage prepaid) to receive a $299 refund and a 40% discount on a Fitbit device.
