In May, a large number of Americans began to go back to school and shopping, and consumption trends were announced

CivicScience recently released the Back to School Report, which shows that a considerable number of consumers in the United States have already started buying back-to-school supplies. Under the influence of inflation and the epidemic, more and more people are going back to school shopping in advance, and the trend is getting earlier and earlier.

Data from May showed that among those who planned to go back to school, 39% had already started shopping for the upcoming new school year, a 5% increase year-on-year. In addition, a small number of people have even completed the purchase of all the items needed for the back-to-school season.

The report pointed out that although physical stores are still the main channel for most people to go back to school, this year, the number of consumers who choose to buy back-to-school items in physical stores has slightly decreased year-on-year, with this proportion being 56% in May 2023 and 58% in May 2022. On the contrary, the number of consumers who choose to shop for back-to-school items online has increased year-on-year.

Although inflation in the United States has been on a downward trend, the latest data shows that 92% of Americans said they are at least "somewhat concerned" about the current inflation situation, which may affect their purchasing power during the back-to-school season.

The survey shows that among American consumers who plan to go back to school, 22% will spend less than last year, while 40% plan to spend more. However, among consumers who are highly concerned about inflation, the proportion of consumers who choose to reduce their back-to-school shopping spending has increased to 26%.

In this year's back-to-school shopping, the phenomenon of learning behind due to the epidemic may affect consumers' back-to-school shopping categories in the coming months. The survey showed that 54% of parents said their children had difficulty in at least one subject.

Among parents, 19% plan to buy a laptop for their child in the next six months. This proportion increases to 25% in families where there is at least one subject with poor academic performance. Tablets are also expected to become a popular purchase for these parents.
