FedEx pilots vote to strike! Summer package delivery in the United States may be disrupted!

It is learned that according to foreign media reports, on May 17, FedEx pilots voted "overwhelmingly" in favor of a strike.

More than 97% of union members reportedly participated in the vote, with 99% authorizing union leaders to call FedEx pilots on strike if necessary.

“It’s time for FedEx to get serious at the bargaining table and invest in our pilots,” said Chris Norman, chairman of FedEx ALPA’s general executive committee.

The report said that with strong demand for air travel, pilots are in short supply, which has given pilots strong bargaining power and they have begun to negotiate better contracts with airlines and package companies.

Earlier this month, Southwest Airlines Co's (LUV.N) pilots union said its members had voted to strike ahead of the peak summer travel season.

Under U.S. law, pilots cannot leave their jobs without approval from the National Mediation Board.

The U.S. board must first determine that additional mediation efforts will not bear fruit and offer both sides a chance to arbitrate. If either side refuses, the two sides enter a 30-day "cooling-off period," after which pilots and management can resort to self-help -- a union strike or a management lockout.

“We remain engaged in productive negotiations with our pilots under the supervision of a government-appointed mediator and will return to the bargaining table next week,” FedEx said in a statement.

Potential FedEx strike exacerbates UPS labor problems

Recently, the Teamsters Association of America is conducting labor-management negotiations with UPS. If the two sides cannot reach an agreement soon, a large-scale strike will break out in the United States this summer.

It is understood that the contract between UPS and the American Teamsters Association, covering about 340,000 workers, will expire on July 31. This means that a new contract must be determined before July 31, otherwise UPS employees will go on a strike with reason on August 1.
