"Dad Economy" is here! More Americans give gifts on Father's Day than on Mother's Day!

According to a survey by consulting firm Numerator, American consumers are more likely to buy gifts on Father's Day this year than on Mother's Day. Numerator conducted a survey of 2,650 consumers in April this year.


According to the survey, nearly nine in ten consumers (88%) said they will celebrate Mother's Day, compared to 79% for Father's Day. However, 57% of Father's Day celebrants plan to buy gifts, compared to a lower proportion of 52% for Mother's Day. (This year, Mother's Day is May 14 and Father's Day is June 18).


About a third of consumers say inflation will affect how they celebrate and spend their money. To save money, consumers plan to buy discounted items (Mother’s Day: 43%, Father’s Day: 42%), use more coupons (Mother’s Day: 21%, Father’s Day: 23%), and prepare affordable meals (Mother’s Day: 19%, Father’s Day: 22%).


For both holidays, 32% of celebrants said they would not take any cost-saving measures.


In addition to gift giving, the top plans for Mother’s Day celebrations include attending or hosting a party (31%), dining out (30%), and cooking/baking (23%), while the top plans for Father’s Day celebrations include barbecuing or grilling (42%), cooking/baking (34%), and dining out (27%).


The survey also found that gift cards will account for more than a third of all gifts. While flowers and plants are the most popular gift choice for Mother's Day (44% of celebrants), gift cards are a close second, with 38% of consumers planning to buy them. When it comes to Father's Day gifts, gift cards top the list, with 35% planning to buy them.


U.S. consumers are nearly twice as likely to purchase alcoholic beverages on Father’s Day as they are on Mother’s Day, with 27% of celebrants planning to purchase alcoholic beverages on Father’s Day, compared to just 14% of Mother’s Day celebrants.


Among those planning to buy alcoholic beverages for Father’s Day, their top choice is beer (61% plan to buy), followed by spirits (37%) and wine (33%). For Mother’s Day, the top choice is wine (58%), followed by beer (36%) and champagne (25%).
