Shopify teams up with Google Cloud to improve search for online stores

It is learned that according to foreign media reports, Shopify recently announced the strengthening of its long-term partnership with Google Cloud. Through this cooperation, Google Cloud's Discovery AI solution will be integrated with Shopify's Commerce Components to optimize the product search and browsing experience to help sellers reduce search abandonment and sales losses.

Google Cloud’s Discovery AI solution provides the following benefits:

  • Retail Search: Providing advanced understanding and better results, including a wider range of queries, such as semantic or non-product specific searches, to effectively match product attributes to store content, enabling fast and relevant product discovery

  • AI-based personalization: Once a shopper selects a category, such as "women's jackets" or "kitchenware," it provides the best product display and ordering. In addition, it can locate products, provide search personalization and recommendations by identifying consumer behavior patterns (such as clicks, shopping cart additions, purchases and other information to determine tastes and preferences).

“Our collaboration with Google Cloud will bring together the best of commerce with the best of search to solve a complex and costly problem for retailers – world-class search and discovery for online stores,” said Shopify President Harley Finkelstein.

According to Google research, retailers worldwide lose more than $2 trillion each year due to abandoned searches. Using a search function or search box while shopping is the most common way U.S. consumers search for products on retail sites (69%), closely followed by general site browsing (63%). However, only 12% of shoppers say they get accurate results or good options every time they use a search function on a retailer's site (11%). 76% of shoppers say they used a search function or search box on a retail site but were unable to find the item they were looking for.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, said: “The integration of Google Cloud and Shopify will enable merchants and brands to quickly deploy AI. Now, retailers will be able to enhance their digital assets with a better product discovery experience, creating a more satisfying shopping experience for their customers.”
