Walmart launches 'visual search' tool to search for related products based on images

It is learned that on December 8, Walmart announced the launch of a visual search shopping website "TrendGetter", which uses image recognition technology to search for products based on pictures uploaded by consumers.

Consumers visit the TrendGetter website and take a photo of the product they want or upload an image from their device. TrendGetter then finds similar items on Walmart's website, and consumers can select and purchase the items directly through the website.

According to the FAQ on TrendGetter's website, the new service uses Google's Vision image recognition technology. According to the website, it can be used to shop for goods in any category, including fashion, technology, toys and decorations. With this search method, consumers can find the exact products they want without having to think about keywords.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and its parent company Alphabet, said in July that artificial intelligence (AI) was driving a new wave of growth in Google Search. People conduct more than 8 billion visual searches per month using Google ads.

Walmart has also launched two other visually-oriented online shopping features.

For example, Walmart recently expanded its augmented reality (AR)-based “View in Your Home” feature to more than 200 TVs, allowing customers to now see how a TV will look in their home before purchasing it.

In September 2022, Walmart partnered with Stylitics to provide customers with virtual try-on displays of different clothing. Currently, Stylitics already provides services for specific brands in the fields of men's clothing, baby and children's clothing, covering a total of 8,000 items across 7 categories, including 16,000 clothing variations. Soon, Walmart will also expand this feature to the home category.
