According to KPMG's latest Consumer Pulse Survey, the average holiday spending of U.S. shoppers in the 2022 holiday season will be $1,072, 6% higher than the same period in 2021. Although average holiday spending this year will be higher than last year, ongoing inflation continues to influence shopper behavior. "While U.S. consumers' spending remains resilient and they plan to spend a little more this holiday season, inflation is eating into their spending budgets," said Matt Kramer, head of KPMG's consumer and retail practice. The survey shows that the top three concerns for holiday shoppers this year are inflation (85%), out-of-stocks (63%) and shipping delays (57%). About half of them plan to shop early due to concerns about out-of-stocks or shipping delays. According to forecasts, only spending in the essentials category is expected to increase during the 2022 holiday season compared to last year, while spending in the non-essentials category will remain relatively stable. The following are other key findings from the survey: -Holiday shoppers plan to buy early: 52% intend to start shopping in October or earlier. -Holiday shoppers who are concerned about inflation have two main plans of action: buy fewer gifts (37%) and buy less expensive gifts (34%). -The majority of holiday shoppers plan to shop on Black Friday (60%), and about 50% plan to shop on Cyber Monday. -Similar to last year, gift cards (52%) and clothing (55%) are the two most popular gift categories.
