The second-hand economy in the United States is heating up! This category is becoming the next hot spot!

According to Mercari's Reuse Report, more and more American families are buying second-hand items for their children due to the pressure of life. The second-hand children and baby products market in the United States is expanding rapidly. By 2030, the market size of second-hand and baby products in the United States will reach 12.8 billion US dollars, and online sales will become the main growth driver of the market.

American families begin to favor buying second-hand children's products

According to Mercari, two-thirds of American parents have purchased second-hand children's and baby products in the past 12 months. For young families, the proportion is even higher, exceeding 80%.

59% of American parents said the primary reason for buying second-hand items is to save money, and more than a third said it was because they were concerned about sustainable development.

The most popular kids resale categories last year, by sales, were:

  • Apparel ($1.7 billion)

  • Toys ($1.3 billion)

  • Sports and outdoor products ($635 million)

  • Furniture ($564 million)

  • Shoes ($554 million)

On the other hand, 50% of American parents resold children's products in the past 12 months, of which 47% said it was for additional income. It is estimated that there are currently about 272.6 million unused children's and baby products in American households, with a value of about $13 billion, which means that American families earn income by reselling items that are no longer used.

The second-hand children's products market continues to expand

According to Mercari's report, the size of the second-hand children's products market in the United States is expanding. In 2021, the market is worth $7 billion, an increase of 11.7% from 2020. It is expected to grow by 83.5% by 2030 and reach a value of $12.8 billion.

Here are some other highlights from Mercari’s report:

More than half of all children's products resold will take place online. Online shopping is driving the growth of the resale market, with more parents buying and selling second-hand items online. By 2030, online children's and baby products resale will more than double, accounting for 53.4% of the resale market, up from 39% in 2021.

Luxury goods are in high demand. The fastest-growing category in the children's resale market is luxury goods. More and more parents are looking for more affordable ways to outfit their children (clothing and fashion items). In 2021, American parents spent $948 million on luxury goods, a figure that is expected to grow to $1.45 billion by 2030.

Buying second-hand children's products can save American parents more than $91 billion each year. In 2021, American parents spent an average of $762 on new children's and baby products. If they bought second-hand, the cost might be $251, which means that American parents can save a total of $511 each year.

American households can earn nearly $400 by selling used items. Currently, there are approximately 272.6 million unused children's and baby items in American households (33 million), with a value of approximately $13 billion. On average, each household can earn nearly $400 by selling used items.

Donating or giving away items for free is also popular, with three-quarters of U.S. households reporting that they have donated or given away at least one child or baby item in the past 12 months.
