According to the latest survey by PYMNTS, there are currently about 51 million Walmart+ members and about 171 million Amazon Prime members in the United States. Walmart+ and Amazon Prime have become the main ways for American consumers to obtain daily savings, special sales events and member-exclusive offers. The survey shows that 84% of consumers subscribe to Amazon Prime because of free shipping; 47% because of the streaming service; and 31% because of the ability to get more daily savings. Similar to Amazon, many consumers (52%) subscribe to Walmart+ for the free shipping service, but some subscribe for same-day grocery delivery (43%) and discounts (37%). In summary, free shipping is the main reason for U.S. consumers to subscribe to retail membership services. In addition, consumers who subscribe to Walmart+ membership value grocery shopping and discounts more, while Amazon Prime members value streaming services such as Prime Video more. It is worth noting that retail membership subscriptions are becoming the first choice for gift giving. Among Amazon Prime subscribers, 75% of users paid for their subscriptions themselves, and the remaining 19.2% were given as gifts by others; while among Walmart+ subscribers, 71% of users paid for their subscriptions themselves, and the remaining 12.9% were given as gifts by others.
