Walmart opens new distribution center in Pennsylvania to speed up online order delivery

Walmart is opening a new distribution center in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, according to foreign media reports. The distribution center will be dedicated to orders from Walmart's website and third-party sellers' marketplace.

The new distribution center covers an area of ​​1.8 million square feet and was announced to start construction in March 2022. Walmart is currently recruiting workers for the center, with the goal of hiring up to 600 local full-time employees by the end of 2022.

The report said that unlike distribution centers that focus on receiving, storing and distributing products to Walmart stores, the new distribution centers will focus on storing millions of items, which will be picked, packaged and shipped to customers as soon as the next day.

The new distribution centers are designed to add more power to Walmart's supply chain, part of its expansion plans as the retail giant prepares for long-term growth. Walmart has been strengthening its supply chain infrastructure, from expanding successful pilots of high-tech store-based "local distribution centers" to applying artificial intelligence to product palletizers at its regional distribution centers.

Walmart also said recently that a distribution center in Salt Lake City will be put into use later this year, which is mainly responsible for orders on Walmart's website. At the same time, it also plans to build a high-tech fresh and grocery distribution center in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, as well as two high-tech supply chain centers at the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and a distribution center in Lebanon, Tennessee.

Karisa Sprague, vice president of logistics at Walmart U.S., said the new distribution center will provide Walmart customers with faster shipping, especially as the holiday season is approaching.
