It is learned that according to foreign media reports, the USPS (United States Postal Service) has increased its rates and made some other changes on July 10. If recent history is a guide, USPS rates will rise again in 3 months.
On July 10, USPS first-class mail rates (considered “prime” service) increased by an average of 6.5%, including a 60-cent increase in the cost of stamps. More importantly for online sellers, the USPS now offers $100 in “pre-purchase” insurance for Priority Mail Domestic Outbound and Priority Mail Returns services.
In announcing the increase in "pre-purchase" insurance coverage, USPS said it was intended to improve the customer experience and increase the company's revenue, and help it "become the shipper of choice for sellers through value-added services."
It is understood that in the past, the USPS has only increased rates once a year, but after taking office, USPS Director Louis DeJoy said that from now on, there will be two rate changes per year.
It is understood that in the past two years, USPS has implemented a price increase strategy during each holiday shopping season. In 2020, USPS announced a temporary price adjustment for key package products during the holiday peak season (October 18 to December 27). In 2021, USPS announced the start of a holiday surcharge (October 3 to December 25). The 2022 holiday peak season is approaching, and with rising fuel prices, continued inflation, and severe global supply chain issues, there is no doubt that sellers will face a new round of price increases.
