Telegram has more than 700 million monthly active users

It is learned that according to the latest data, Telegram has more than 700 million monthly active users, and the average monthly active users in January 2021 were 500 million. A premium version with additional features is currently being launched TechCrunch, and the subscription service fee for premium users has not yet been announced, but it is expected to be between US$5-6.

Paid users can also follow up to 1,000 channels, double the 500 channels that free users can follow for free. They can also create up to 20 chat folders, each of which can have up to 200 chat groups. Telegram Premium users can also add up to four accounts in the app and pin up to 10 chat groups.

Premium users can also convert voice messages to text, have access to exclusive stickers, and use animated images as profile photos. Paid users can also block ads in the app. Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov also promised to make some core features in the app free to users and continue to build new features for non-paying users.

Telegram said it was the first time a messaging app with hundreds of millions of users had launched a premium package. Some of Telegram's main competitors, including Signal, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Apple's Messages and Google's Messages, do not offer similar premium services.

Introducing the new "Request to Join" feature

On June 19, Telegram said it was rolling out a feature called "Join Requests" that would allow all users to join public groups without an invite link. Another new feature for free users will allow verified groups and channels to display their badges at the top of the chat. The new update also supports rendering animations at 120 frames per second for new iPads and iPhones. This round of updates includes more than 100 fixes and optimizations for mobile and computer applications, including optimization to eliminate bugs, increase speed, and expand minor functions.

Some analysts had earlier hoped that Telegram would be able to monetize the platform through its blockchain token project. But after several delays and regulatory troubles, Telegram said in 2020 that it had abandoned the project and offered to return the $1.2 billion it had raised from investors.

It is learned that in March 2021, Telegram raised more than $1 billion from a number of investors including Mubadala and Abu Dhabi Catalyst Partners by selling convertible bonds from its IPO five years ago.
