DHL eCommerce Solutions has installed two robotic sorting systems at its Atlanta distribution center, which has greatly increased sorting volume and package handling efficiency over the past year. The DoraSorter robotic systems can sort more than 1,000 parcels per hour and can also increase output “up to four times.” One system sorts parcels into postal bags for distribution to 80 last-mile ZIP code destinations, while another sorts parcels into 20 individual shipping containers. The systems are part of a $100 million investment by the DHL unit in automated package sorting systems that will be completed within 18 months, said Scott Ashbaugh, vice president of operations for the Americas at DHL eCommerce Solutions. The investment in automated sorting is a key part of a $300 million spending effort by DHL eCommerce Solutions to expand and improve its operations in the United States. In addition to the two fully automatic cycle sorters already installed in its network, DHL will install two more automatic sorters in Cincinnati and Chicago next year, which will be able to sort 40,000 to 50,000 parcels per hour. In addition, the DHL division has also applied more small sorters in its network, which can handle about 14,000 parcels per hour. It is learned that DHL CEO Ashbaugh said that DHL began to pursue a higher level of order automation processing capabilities before the outbreak of the new crown. The robotic sorting system is a long-term investment to improve warehouse safety and efficiency, rather than a quick solution to solve recent labor challenges. In addition, DHL has deployed overhead scanners in 19 distribution centers, which greatly improved the efficiency of order processing.
