It is learned that the Port of Los Angeles set a record for container handling in March, handling 958,674 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in March, setting a container handling record for three consecutive months and completing the highest first quarter in history, 3.5% higher than the highest record in the first quarter of last year.

The Port of Los Angeles’ 958,674 TEUs handled in March were the highest March record in 115 years, second only to 1,012,048 TEUs in May last year and 980,729 TEUs in October 2020.

In March 2022, the Port of Los Angeles' loaded import volume reached 495,196 TEUs, up 1% year-on-year. Loaded exports were 11,781 TEUs, down 9% from the same period last year. In the past 41 months, Los Angeles' export container handling volume has declined in 37 months.

Empty containers at the Port of Los Angeles climbed to 351,697 TEUs in March, up 2% from last year. As of the third month of 2022, the Port of Los Angeles has handled a total of 2,682,034 TEUs, up 3.5% from 2021.

It is learned that the Port of Los Angeles is the busiest seaport in the Western Hemisphere and the most important port for North American trade, ranking first among U.S. container ports for 22 consecutive years. In 2021, the port facilitated $294 billion in trade and handled a total of 10.7 million containers, setting a record for the highest year in 115 years.
