California sues Walmart for illegally disposing of more than 1 million pieces of hazardous waste!

According to foreign media reports, on Monday, 13 prosecutors in California jointly filed a lawsuit against Walmart, accusing the company of illegally disposing of hazardous waste in landfills.

The lawsuit alleges that Walmart has illegally dumped more than 1 million pieces of hazardous waste weighing 160,000 pounds each year at landfills in the state over the past six years, including lithium batteries, pesticides and cleaning supplies, materials that landfills cannot handle.

In the 42-page document filed Monday, state prosecutors also accused Walmart of allegedly dumping "confidential customer information and violating California environmental laws. When toxic waste goes to landfills, the materials can leach into the state's drinking water as toxic pollutants or spread into the air as dangerous gases."

It is reported that this is not Walmart's first lawsuit in California. In 2010, the California Attorney General's Office reached a $25 million settlement agreement for Walmart's illegal disposal of hazardous waste. However, a 2015 inspection found that Walmart was still dumping hazardous waste.

The California Department of Justice said it conducted 58 inspections of trash compactors removed from Walmart stores since 2015 and found dozens of items listed as hazardous waste.

Walmart spokesman Randy Hargrove said they have always followed the state's hazardous waste compliance program and actively cooperated to avoid litigation. Instead, they filed this unreasonable lawsuit. The state requires a level of compliance for waste disposal of common household products and other items in its stores that exceeds the legal requirements.
