U.S. supermarket chain Costco plans to double the number of stores with pickup lockers in the next year. The retailer currently has lockers in 112 of its stores in the United States and Puerto Rico.
Data shows that excluding the impact of gasoline prices and currency fluctuations, Costco's online sales increased by 13.3% year-on-year. Its quarterly online sales accounted for about 8% or 9% of Costco's overall sales.
Costco's strategy was successful, encouraging customers who shop online to pick up their orders in stores, increasing customer traffic by half. However, earlier this year, Costco began testing curbside pickup in New Mexico, but soon stopped the program due to poor results.
In addition, Costco has launched an online marketplace called "Costco Next", which is a curated limited supply of goods, all arranged directly by suppliers. The service currently offers nearly 1,000 products from 34 suppliers. The company said that the strategy of selling relatively small quantities of products in large quantities has brought overwhelming economies of scale, greatly improving the efficiency of their business.
