Walmart expands drone delivery coverage to 1.8 million homes in Texas

It is learned that on January 9, Walmart announced that it will expand its drone delivery service to 75% of the population of Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), or up to 1.8 million households in Texas.

Prathibha Rajashekhar, senior vice president of innovation and automation at Walmart U.S., said the expansion will bring the ultimate convenience of drone delivery to communities in the DFW area, where customers will be able to order a variety of items from Walmart and receive them in just minutes.

Walmart is reportedly working with drone startups Wing and Zipline to deliver packages to customers. Both companies have received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly drones "without a dedicated observer in sight at all times."

Using Walmart's drone delivery service, customers can receive items in 30 minutes or less. Walmart said the service complements other fast delivery options, such as three-hour express delivery, late-night delivery before 10 p.m. and InHome (with the option to deliver directly to the customer's refrigerator), ensuring that customers get the goods they want how, when and how they want.

Walmart has completed more than 20,000 drone deliveries in the past two years. Walmart has seen customers use its drone service for a variety of reasons, including when they need some medicine in a pinch, such as for a cold, to ordering snacks and drinks on a whim.

Walmart has thousands of items available for drone delivery, from baby wipes to birthday candles, and customers who live within 10 miles of a Walmart store can use the service.

According to reports, through this expansion, Walmart has taken a leading position in drone delivery, becoming the first retailer in the United States to provide drone delivery services to so many households. In addition, this move highlights Walmart’s continued commitment to innovation and revolutionizing the way customers shop and receive orders.
