90% of Americans will buy holiday gifts, with TikTok being the main source of inspiration

It is learned that a new survey shows that more and more American consumers are using TikTok as a mainstream holiday shopping tool.

According to the latest survey conducted by ESW on 890 American adults, 36% of respondents will use TikTok during this holiday season, making TikTok the most popular holiday shopping tool for all generations. Among this group, 10% plan to shop directly on TikTok.

The survey found that this year, 25% of people will use TikTok to find holiday gift inspiration. Among the 18-29 age group (young people, including Gen Z and millennials), 53% of people use TikTok as a holiday shopping tool.

One trend worth noting is that older respondents are more likely to order gifts from TikTok Shop: 16% of respondents aged 40-60 plan to order gifts from TikTok, while only 8% of respondents aged 18-29 plan to order gifts from TikTok.

Overall, online shopping is still popular this holiday season, with 90% of respondents planning to buy holiday gifts online. In addition, compared with last year, 40% of respondents plan to increase their online shopping frequency this year, while only 10% plan to reduce their online shopping frequency.

Other key findings from the survey include:

  • The average holiday shopping budget for all respondents is $827

  • Respondents paid an average of $6.43 for expedited shipping, which is less than the starting price for USPS Priority Mail ($9.35).

  • Respondents were willing to wait nearly a week to get free shipping.

  • Most respondents start shopping for holiday gifts on October 22. Nearly a quarter (23%) begin shopping before October.

  • Last-minute shoppers, who start shopping in November or later, have budgets 11% lower than all respondents and 17% lower than early birds.
