USPS package volume is on a downward trend, receiving only 11.7 billion pieces during the 2022 holiday season!

It is learned that recently, USPS (United States Postal Service) reported performance indicators for the 2022 holiday season and delivery performance indicators for the first week of the second quarter of fiscal year 2023.

USPS said it received 11.7 billion packages and mail between November 26 and December 30, 2022. Unlike previous years, the company did not disclose specific package volumes for each service this year.

Here are USPS pickup volumes for the past three years:

  • 2020: 12.7 billion

  • 2021: 13.2 billion

  • 2022: 11.7 billion

USPS also reported that its average package and mail delivery time was 2.5 days in the first week of the second quarter of fiscal year 2023. Specifically:

  • First-Class Mail: 89.4% of first-class mail was delivered on time in accordance with USPS service standards, a decrease of 1.6 percentage points from the first fiscal quarter.

  • Marketing Mail: 93.6% of marketing mail was delivered on time in accordance with USPS service standards, consistent with the performance in the first fiscal quarter.

  • Periodicals: 84.5% of periodicals were delivered on time according to USPS service standards, consistent with performance in the first fiscal quarter.

The company said that in late December, due to the winter storm that hit the Midwest and East Coast of the United States, transportation was interrupted, and USPS's cargo delivery was also affected. USPS will resume service in the affected areas as soon as possible. The 2022 holiday season is over, and USPS will continue to focus on modernizing outdated and aging distribution facilities across the United States in 2023 to provide high-quality services to the American public and commercial customers.
