UPS plans to hire 100,000 seasonal employees to prepare for the surge in package volume during the holiday sales season!

It is learned that on September 7, UPS announced plans to hire more than 100,000 seasonal employees to cope with the surge in the number of packages during the holiday sales season. UPS also took similar hiring measures before the 2020 and 2021 holiday sales seasons. It is reported that holiday purchases start in October and last until January. The surge in the number of packages during the extra-long sales season requires a large number of employees to handle.

Job openings will be for full-time and part-time seasonal positions, primarily package handlers, drivers and driver assistants. In recent years, about 35% of seasonal package handling workers have subsequently become permanent employees. UPS seasonal drivers make $21 per hour, while trailer drivers make up to $35 per hour. Starting pay for package handlers ranges from $15 to $21 per hour.

UPS Executive Vice President Nando Cesarone said in a statement that UPS has made the "hiring process as simple and easy as possible." It takes most people 25 minutes from filling out an online application to receiving a job offer, down from 30 minutes a year ago.

UPS said in a statement that about 80% of seasonal positions do not require an interview. At the same time, UPS also plans to hire more workers to prepare for potential union strikes to deal with the risk of employee strikes.

Contract negotiations between UPS and the Teamsters Union are set to begin next spring, when their current contract expires in July 2023. Labor experts have already predicted a strike by UPS drivers and package handlers.

It is understood that if a strike occurs, it will affect a large number of American families and further deteriorate the supply chain. It is estimated that 6% of the US GDP comes from UPS truck transportation each year. Among the 534,000 permanent employees worldwide, about 350,000 truck drivers work as drivers and package sorters for UPS.
