The top ten most popular retailers in the US back-to-school season are announced! Amazon ranks third!

It is learned that according to a survey by JLL (JLL), the top three most popular retailers in the United States during the 2022 back-to-school shopping season are Walmart, Target and Amazon.

According to the survey, when asked about shopping destinations, almost two-thirds (63.5%) of American parents chose Walmart, 53.3% chose Target, and 50% chose Amazon.

In addition, the other retailers in the top ten are Old Navy, Staples, Dollar Tree, Macy's, Kohl's, Costco and Office Depot. But their popularity lags far behind Amazon, which ranks third, and Old Navy, which ranks fourth, is only chosen by 7.5% of parents.

Naveen Jaggi, president of JLL Retail Advisory Services, said that despite the continued rise in inflation, this year's U.S. back-to-school spending is still likely to hit a record high. Rising prices are an opportunity for retailers to gain consumer trust and increase loyalty by offering discounts and free shipping options.

The survey also found that more than half of back-to-school shoppers will look for discounts and coupons; about 50% will reduce the number of products they buy and focus only on necessities; a third will reuse existing products; and another 16% will buy second-hand products instead of new ones. In addition, free shipping or delivery is the most important factor for online shopping.

The survey results also show that most American parents plan to mitigate the impact of inflation by saving costs. More than half of parents plan to cut back-to-school expenses due to inflation, 37.9% of parents plan to spend less than last year, 27.2% plan to spend significantly less, and 31.8% say back-to-school expenses will not be affected by inflation.

On average, each American family will spend $257 this year. However, back-to-school spending varies by household income. Parents with incomes below $50,000 plan to spend 24.2% less than the average ($257), while parents with incomes above $150,000 plan to spend 60.2% more than the average ($543).

Other findings include:

  • 25.6% of American parents start shopping in or before June. Most parents will start shopping in July and August, and categories such as clothing and stationery will see initial growth in sales.
  • About 31.5% of millennials started shopping by July, and more than 7% of Generation Z had already completed their shopping.
  • 34.2% of Gen Xers will wait until August to shop, when back-to-school sales will be boosted.
  • More than half of parents will shop at open-air centers (up from 47.6% last year) and 43.9% will shop at enclosed malls.
  • 78.2% of parents plan to shop at discount stores; 68.6% of parents plan to shop online, especially high-income families.
