Compared with the big moves of other major retailers on Prime Day this year, Walmart seems much calmer. Recently, a Walmart spokesperson said that Walmart will not launch its own promotions on Prime Day this year. This is also the first time that Walmart has given up participating in the Prime Day promotion.
On the other hand, other retailers are still moving forward with Prime Day-related sales events. Target is holding Deals Days; Best Buy will hold Black Friday sales in July; and Macy's kicked off its Black Friday event in July on Thursday.
In previous years, Walmart has always been the "focus" of Prime Day, but why is it a little silent at this point this year? Discounts have become the norm, and Walmart no longer offers discounts
This year, the US retail industry has experienced an inventory crisis, and major retailers have launched large discounts to clear excess inventory, and Walmart is no exception. So far, Walmart has been offering large discounts on bicycles, air fryers, clothing and other products for several weeks.
In recent weeks, "clearance" signs have become a fixture at Walmart's offline stores, and its website has also launched a variety of promotions with considerable discounts.
Simply put, after discounted prices have become the norm and even become the "regular retail price" in the minds of consumers, Walmart now has "no more discounts to offer."
The pandemic has created a unique backdrop for Prime Day this year with excess inventory, massive discounts, and slowing consumption. Inflation has cut into Americans' budgets, reducing discretionary spending. Heavy promotions by some retailers have also forced other retailers to cut prices.
After a COVID-19 pandemic marked by fewer discounts and higher profits, consumers may return to a bargain-hunting mentality as the back-to-school and holiday shopping seasons approach.
There are also signs that heavy discounting will spill over into next season. Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner said at an investor event in early June that it will take "several quarters" for Walmart to return to more normal inventory levels.
Walmart chooses to target the back-to-school season as it shifts its focus
Walmart's announcement of back-to-school-related sales comes just one day after Target launched its back-to-school promotions early. In response to budget cuts that have reduced spending on supplies by school districts, Walmart has also created a special online classroom hub that allows teachers to sign up and share their "wish lists" of what they need for back-to-school in the fall.
Walmart's operator is also actively pushing the theme of speed and convenience with its Walmart+ service, which this year has added seasonal products to the mix, offering curbside pickup, same-day delivery or free two-day shipping.
Although Walmart has not yet responded to a request for comment on the launch of Prime Day this year, it is clear that Walmart is still counting on discounts to stimulate the next round of sales. In addition, Walmart + Weekend was held two weeks ago. In a sense, this move is to seize Amazon Prime Day and narrow its lead.
