Walmart adds InHome grocery delivery service as Walmart+ add-on service!

Walmart announced today that its InHome grocery delivery service is now an optional add-on service for Walmart+ members. Walmart's InHome grocery delivery service is an alternative to Amazon Prime, providing free delivery services with no minimum purchase. Walmart said that the two previously independent memberships will now be combined into one, providing customers with a more complete and simplified experience.

Walmart+'s monthly subscription costs $12.95 and the annual fee is $98. Customers can now add the InHome delivery service to the Walmart+ service for an additional $7 per month or $40 per year, saving $10 per year for annual subscription members. Users who are not subscribed to Walmart+ can visit inhome.walmart.com and sign up for a 30-day free trial. Users who are already Walmart+ monthly or annual subscribers will not be eligible for the free trial.

Walmart's InHome delivery service

When Walmart+ members place a grocery order on the Walmart app or website, they will need to select InHome as their preferred delivery option. An InHome associate will enter the home with a one-time access code to unlock the door or garage. To get home delivery service, customers must have a smart garage keypad, which can be purchased from InHome for $49.95. Delivery associates will wear a camera that records the entire delivery process. Customers will have access to video for up to one week after each delivery.

Walmart's InHome delivery service, first launched in the fall of 2019, allows customers to place grocery orders online and then have their groceries delivered directly to their refrigerator by letting a Walmart grocery delivery person enter their home through a smart lock. The service is aimed at customers who work or travel outside of their home during the day and want to receive their groceries while they are away. InHome addresses the main complaint consumers have about online grocery delivery - you have to be at home (or at least home quickly) to receive your groceries in a timely manner.

Walmart has also recently launched InHome in several new markets, including Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Dallas, Austin, San Jose and San Francisco, nearly doubling the service’s reach. Walmart launched the expansion earlier this year in Northwest Arkansas, Atlanta, Phoenix and Washington, D.C.

Walmart doubles down on delivery investments

As part of the expansion, Walmart announced plans to hire more than 3,000 delivery drivers within a year. It also said it would build a fleet of 100% electric delivery vehicles for deliveries while expanding the service in the communities it serves. Earlier this year, the company announced an electric vehicle partnership with BrightDrop to expand the service.

“InHome has the best customer experience in the industry and is expanding significantly across the U.S. as we reach more than 30 million homes by the end of the year,” said Whitney Pegden, InHome vice president and general manager.

Walmart said its e-commerce sales have grown 38% in the past two years and plans to continue investing in delivery to create a seamless and flexible experience for customers. Walmart will also increase its delivery capacity by 35% this year to meet growing demand and continue to expand into new markets.
