Shopify faces class-action lawsuit for failing to protect user information

It is learned that according to foreign media reports, Shopify buyers, including Gregory Forsberg, Christopher Gunter, Samuel Kissinger and Scott Sipprell, recently filed a class action lawsuit against Shopify and its payment provider Ledger.

The lawsuit was reportedly filed because Shopify failed to protect their personal information, including full names, email addresses, phone numbers, and postal addresses, during the 2020 Ledger SAS data breach, which may have allowed the information to fall into the hands of hackers.

Shopify buyers say that approximately 272,000 Ledger cryptocurrency digital wallet owners and other Shopify buyers, like them, had their personal information exposed in the data breach.

Shopify buyers stated in the class action lawsuit: "If their account information was disclosed to hackers, it would result in the loss of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency, and these currencies would never be returned to their original owners."

It is learned that in the early years, Shopify integrated with Ledger, allowing buyers to use Ledger to manage and keep their own wallets on the Shopify platform.

Forsberg, Gunter, Kissinger, and Sipprell are reportedly claiming that Shopify and Ledger committed negligence, per se negligence, and unjust enrichment, and violated Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, North Carolina’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, Arizona’s Consumer Fraud Act, and Kentucky’s Consumer Protection Act.

According to reports, the class action lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, and the plaintiffs repeatedly emphasized that "Shopify failed to protect the identity information of its customers."
