The American Pet Products Association (APPA) recently released its latest pet owner survey, which includes data from 2,019 pet owners and non-pet owners across the United States, detailing how these factors are affecting the industry. The survey shows that the number of pets in the United States continues to rise, with 14% of pet owners buying a new pet during the epidemic, up from 10% in 2020. According to APPA data, most of these new pet owners are Generation Z or Millennials. Generational consumption sentiment is changing, with younger pet owners (Gen Z and Millennials) more likely to have pets during the pandemic than other generations, and they generally spend more on pet supplies. On the other hand, younger pet owners (Gen Z and Millennials) are also more likely to be affected by the pandemic. More than a third (39%) of Gen Z pet owners said they plan to spend less money on pet food, while baby boomers' shopping behavior was the least affected by the pandemic, and Gen X's purchasing behavior remained unchanged. According to APPA data, pet owners are most likely to purchase pet vitamins and supplements online. In November 2021, 6% of pet owners purchased their last pet food only from an online store, up from 13% in December 2020. Additionally, in the November 2021 study, 48% of Baby Boomers purchased pet products in person, 36% purchased exclusively through online stores, and 30% purchased online through physical retailers, numbers that were largely unchanged from December 2020 behavior. Middle-aged and older adults are transitioning to purchasing more pet products online, with a November 2021 survey showing that 83% prefer this option. Black and Hispanic pet owners in the U.S. are also shifting from in-person to online purchases of pet products. In November 2021, 84% of Black pet owners said they purchased pet products from online retailers, up from 49% in December 2020, while only 10% reported shopping in person, down from 44% in December 2020. Meanwhile, nearly 74% of Hispanic pet owners reported purchasing pet products through online retailers, up from 57% in December 2020, leaving only 20% preferring to shop in-store, down from 34% in December 2020.
