Canadian e-commerce growth slows down! Amazon maintains its market dominance!

It is learned that according to the 2021 Canadian E-commerce Survey of RBC Capital Markets, despite the sluggish e-commerce market in the past year, Amazon is still the market leader in Canada, with 84% of Canadian consumers having purchased goods from the e-commerce giant in the past year, followed by Walmart (36%).

The survey also found that 54% of respondents said they visit Amazon at least once a week, and another 35% said they shop 3 to 5 times a month. The most frequently purchased categories are electronics, music and movies (43%), clothing and accessories (41%), and books (37%).

The RBC report, written by analysts Sabahat Khan and Irene Nattel, said Amazon's advantage lies in its low selling prices and delivery costs.

Amazon has been steadily expanding its presence in Canada over the past year, increasing the number of logistics centers scattered across the country and expanding its technical teams in Toronto and Vancouver. In December last year, Amazon announced that it would speed up shipping to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories and Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory, reducing the average delivery time from 10 to 12 days to 5 days.

Despite Amazon's lead in e-commerce shopping, Canada's overall e-commerce growth has slowed slightly compared to the explosive growth trend during the pandemic. The RBC survey found that 63% of respondents visit online retail sites at least once a week, down slightly from 65% in 2020. However, the country's use of online shopping is becoming more and more popular, with nearly a third (29%) of respondents saying they shop online at least once a week, up from 25% in 2020.
