US retail sales increased by 6.9% year-on-year in December! The apparel industry performed best!

It is learned that according to data from the National Retail Federation (NRF), U.S. retail sales in December 2021 increased by 6.9% year-on-year (excluding auto dealers, gas stations and restaurants), and increased by 8.1% compared with 2019. Overall, Americans had higher levels of consumption both online and offline in December, ending 2021 with higher and stronger spending.

U.S. e-commerce sales reportedly grew 13.5% year-over-year in December and 60.4% compared to 2019.

NRF noted that the following are key categories of U.S. sales data for November:

  • Clothing sales increased by 46.3% year-on-year and 22.6% compared to 2019;
  • Department store sales increased 19.1% year-on-year and 15.3% compared to 2019.
  • Sales of electronic products and appliances increased by 19.1% year-on-year and 15.3% compared to 2019;
  • Grocery store sales increased 8.3% year-over-year and 16.9% compared to 2019;
  • Jewelry sales increased by 31% year-on-year and 6.9% compared to 2019;
  • Luxury goods (excluding jewelry) grew 46.8% year-on-year and 20.7% compared to 2019;
  • Restaurant sales increased 51.9% year-over-year, up 21.1% from 2019.

NRF said retailers need to pay attention to the following consumer purchasing trends in 2022:

  1. More purposeful and conscious shopping: 85% of adults say they pay attention to sustainable shopping and hope that sellers can provide and create products in an inclusive and green way, such as product packaging, product transportation, etc.
  2. Focus on experiential purchases: Sellers should keep up with the trends of the times and reach consumers through various sales channels, such as the now popular "live streaming" and "short video sharing".
  3. Value personal privacy: Consumers are more concerned about whether their personal privacy can be guaranteed not to be leaked during the purchasing process. Once most people find that their personal privacy has been leaked, they will not continue to buy from the retailer.
