2.21 million TEUs handled in October! U.S. port container volume will hit a new high in 2021!

It is learned that according to the monthly "Global Port Tracking" report released by the National Retail Federation (NRF), despite severe supply chain problems, the import volume and growth rate of major retail container ports in the United States in 2021 will still reach historical highs.

According to NRF research, total import volume at major U.S. ports is expected to reach 26 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2021, an increase of 18.3% year-on-year. Last year, it was 22 million TEUs, an increase of 1.9%.

Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at NRF, said that due to the high demand for consumer shopping, the accumulation of containers at U.S. ports reached its highest level this year. U.S. ports handled 2.21 million TEUs in October, an increase of 3.5% from September, making it the busiest month of the year.

Jonathan Gold added that total import volume at U.S. ports is expected to be about 2.21 million TEUs in November this year, a year-on-year increase of 5.1%, and about 2.2 million TEUs in December, a year-on-year increase of 4.6%.

It is understood that U.S. port throughput is expected to remain stable at single-digit year-on-year growth until the end of the first quarter of 2022.
