2 days left for Thanksgiving! Nearly 90 million Americans will shop online this weekend!

With only two days left until Thanksgiving, the National Retail Federation, the world's largest trade association headquartered in Washington, predicts that the upcoming 2021 sales season may break retail sales records, based on data collected by NPD Group from 600,000 retail locations and online and e-commerce platforms. It is predicted that from Thanksgiving on November 25 to Cyber Monday on November 29, 158.3 million people in the United States will shop, compared with 156.6 million last year and 165.3 million in 2019.

NRF statistics also show that 30.6 million people are expected to shop in physical stores or online on Thanksgiving, and the number will be 108 million during Black Friday. 58.1 million and 31.2 million Americans will choose to shop online for Thanksgiving products on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, and 62.8 million Americans will choose to shop online on Cyber Monday.

NRF also predicts that sales in November and December will increase by 8.5%-10.5% over the same period in 2020, reaching a scale of US$843.4 billion to US$859 billion. The average sales growth over the past five years has been 4.4%, with the highest growth last year (+8.2%), and it is expected to break new highs this year.

“Momentum is strong heading into the holiday shopping season,” said Matthew Shay, NRF president and CEO. “As incomes and disposable incomes increase, Americans are expected to see a significant increase in online shopping spending. Retailers need to seize the opportunity to make significant investments in their supply chains to ensure there are products on the shelves to meet this year’s elevated purchasing demand.” Experts in other industries are also predicting similar trends.
