Amid shortages of goods during peak season, American consumers' demand for gift cards surges!

It is learned that according to a survey by market research company InMarket, gift cards are becoming the preferred holiday gifts for American consumers under the adverse effects of supply chain disruptions, inflation, and repeated epidemics. Shoppers spend on gift cards earlier than last year, and the average spending has increased year-on-year.

It is reported that across the entire sales channel, Visa gift cards are the most popular, accounting for 14.8% of U.S. consumer purchases, with an average spend of $106.87 per shopper; followed by Amazon gift cards, accounting for 13.5%, up from 6.7% last year, with an average spend of $75.8 per shopper; Mastercard ranks third, accounting for 1.3%.

The report said that for American consumers, e-commerce gift card spending currently accounts for 29.8% of total spending in this category, up from 19.6% in 2020. In the food sector, McDonald's (2.5%) gift card purchase share lags behind Starbucks (11.7%); in the electronics sector, Google gift cards have the highest share of 5.3%, followed by Xbox (4.9%) and Apple (1.9%).

It is learned that supply chain logistics and worker shortages have caused delays in the transportation of goods. Therefore, Americans have turned to the concept of "buy now and talk later" while starting to buy gift cards. For consumers, it is better to have something than not. Although they may not consume it completely during the peak season this year, gift cards can provide certain discounts for later consumption, making them more attractive.
