The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Tuesday that all companies must stop producing alcohol-based hand sanitizers by the end of this year. In March last year, due to the outbreak of the epidemic, the demand for disinfectant products surged. To solve the tight supply of such products, the FDA has relaxed the alcohol content limit for hand sanitizers.
On Tuesday, the agency revoked its previous franchise for hand sanitizer, and companies that previously produced hand sanitizer should stop production from December 31, 2021, comply with the agency's new production requirements, and no longer sell them to wholesalers or retailers before March 31, 2022.
The FDA said that in recent months, the production of alcohol-based hand sanitizers has reached saturation and is no longer in short supply. During the epidemic, it has been one of the best-selling categories in the global market.
According to research by Future Market Insights, the global hand sanitizer market was valued at approximately US$1.4 billion in 2020 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 7.2% over the next decade.
