It is learned that Amazon recently plans to recruit another 125,000 warehouse and transportation workers, and increase their average starting salary in the United States to more than US$18 per hour.
Amazon did not give an exact wage increase figure, but a $1 increase on top of the $17 hourly wage would equate to a roughly 6% hike.
Previously, the company also offered signing bonuses of up to $3,000 to attract talent and covered 100% of college tuition for all its employees.
Amazon's series of operations also demonstrate the increasingly scarce labor market in the United States. Not only Amazon, but also its competitors Walmart and Target have introduced measures such as salary increases and education benefits to cope with the tight labor market.
In addition, Amazon said that part of the 125,000 additional employees was to solve the problem of natural layoffs, and most of the staff expansion was to meet the growing business needs. Earlier this month, Amazon's new CEO Andy Jassy announced that it would recruit more than 55,000 technical and corporate positions worldwide.
