Amazon is allowing employees who smoke marijuana to be hired to solve the shortage of delivery drivers in the United States, according to foreign media reports. The company said that marijuana drug testing reduced the number of potential employees by 39%, and the move will significantly increase the number of applicants by up to 400%.
Amazon is reportedly lobbying the federal government to legalize marijuana and is recommending that its shipping partners also eliminate marijuana drug testing for job applicants. In June, Amazon announced it would no longer conduct marijuana drug testing on potential employees.
However, some of Amazon's delivery partners do not want the drug testing to be eliminated. One partner said that if their driver had an accident and tested positive for marijuana, it would be their responsibility, not Amazon's.
It is learned that an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement that marijuana testing will have a certain impact on communities of color and slow down job growth. He also said that the company will have zero tolerance for employees who smoke marijuana and affect their work. If a delivery driver tests positive for marijuana after an accident or reasonable suspicion, the employee will no longer be employed by Amazon.
