The Hindu nationalist RSS and economic wing SJM on Wednesday called on the government to amend the new law, the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, to further curb the growing presence of American e-commerce giants in India. Amazon and Flipkart, the two largest companies in India's e-commerce market, have been accused by the Indian government of flouting local laws and indulging in predatory pricing. Ashwani Mahajan, co-convener of the SJM, said: “Even though the position of small Indian traders is being exploited by US e-commerce giants, the new law does not provide any protection for vulnerable groups like small Indian traders.” RSS noted that the new law fails to define the concepts of "dominant market position" or "abuse" of position and that e-commerce platforms must ensure transparency in their business practices, disclose details of their total business and advertising costs, and make public complaints received every three months. It is reported that the SJM suggested amendments to the new e-commerce rules, indicating that the new law must protect the rights of end users. Specifically, it requires "appropriate two-way communication" between buyers and sellers; punishes e-commerce companies for unfair business practices; and calls for the establishment of electronic courts to quickly resolve disputes related to e-commerce.
