According to foreign media reports, due to the epidemic and the piracy crisis, congestion at the Port of Lagos in Nigeria, a major African port, has intensified recently. Some shipping company representatives, in interviews with local media, used words such as " complete chaos " and " simply a disaster " to describe the current chaotic situation in the Port of Lagos. An operations manager at a large shipping company said: “Some of our ships have to wait 80 days before they are allowed to enter the port. This is unacceptable!” The source added that due to the recent increase in instability in the Nigerian coastal areas, some ships have to wait for berthing in Cotonou, Benin or Lomé, Togo. It further stated that the congestion crisis at the Port of Lagos has spread to several ports in West Africa, including Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire, and Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire in the Republic of Congo. It is understood that in 2020, the terminal of each port in Nigeria could receive and unload about 6-7 ships per week, but now, this number has dropped to 3 ships per week. |
