Shipping costs are soaring! Sellers' goods "disappear" and logistics problems are holding them back!

The cross-border industry has just experienced a magical 2020. Before the pandemic, product shortages, logistics obstructions, and overseas warehouse explosions, what will sellers face in the new year?

01
Ocean freight rates have been rising and will continue to rise for some time

2020 has passed, but shipping costs have not shown a downward trend. Instead, they have skyrocketed.
According to data from the Shanghai Shipping Exchange, last week, the freight rates (sea freight and sea freight surcharges) from Shanghai to the US West Coast and US East Coast base ports were US$4,080/FEU and US$4,876/FEU, respectively. The US West Coast route rose 4.6% from the previous week.

In addition, several shipping companies including CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, Evergreen Marine, HMM, ONE, Yang Ming Marine Transport and ZIM have announced that starting from January 1, 2021, a general rate increase surcharge (GRI) ranging from US$1,000 to US$1,200 per FEU will be charged on the trans-Pacific route.

"The still-surging demand for ocean shipping and the resulting global equipment shortage have pushed up freight rates on most major Asia routes this week, while the upward pressure on demand appears to have eased," industry insiders said.

Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of shipping company Hapag-Lloyd, revealed at a press conference that global logistics giants and container liner companies expect that the situation, including chaotic market, lack of berths and container shortages, will continue for some time in 2021.

In addition, Tim Scharwath, CEO of freight forwarding giant DHL Global Freight Forwarding, also attended the meeting.

The two executives agreed that the very unique circumstances following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic this spring led to a historic imbalance in supply and demand.

There are many signs that the strong market we have seen will continue after the Spring Festival and into the second quarter. "Habben Jansen pointed out that the current market congestion will take some time to resolve.

02
Air delivery dropped sharply

The prices of sea freight containers continue to soar, but air freight prices have recently begun to drop sharply, dropping by more than ten yuan compared to before.

A freight forwarder said that the cross-border peak season has ended and it is approaching the holidays. Some factories have already closed for holidays and the shipment volume is not as large as before, so not many sellers need to use air freight.

Some industry veterans also pointed out that on the one hand, airlines may lower prices to compete with shipping companies; on the other hand, some freight forwarders may sell at ultra-low prices under the banner of direct flights, but in fact they may be empty shipping, and in the end they will use the "epidemic delay" as an excuse. Therefore, sellers are reminded to choose logistics carefully and be careful of being scammed!

03
The seller's goods "disappeared", so be careful when choosing logistics

Logistics issues have made sellers worried. Just now, one seller’s goods “disappeared”!

The freight forwarder stated that the goods have been delivered, but the warehouse has not yet received them. Generally, most shipments will be received about two weeks after delivery. However, this time, there has been no news on several shipments for a month. If it is due to warehouse overflow, and other goods in the same warehouse have been put on the shelves, then excluding the warehouse overflow factor, what is the reason?

Many sellers have encountered the same problem. Some have already received their goods a month ago, but still have no logistics information, and some have not received their goods for half a year.

Some sellers have pointed out that it is normal for goods shipped by sea to be put on the shelves one month after signing for them, and it is also normal for goods shipped by air to be put on the shelves two days to half a month after signing for them. Ask the logistics company for a proof of signing for them and open a case, and there is a certain chance that the goods can be put on the shelves faster.

Logistics problems have always existed, and there are too many interfering factors. In addition to warehouse overflows, logistics companies and other reasons, there may also be cargo shipwrecks. Everyone should be cautious when choosing logistics!
